Scopello: A Medieval Paradise in Western Sicily

Scopello is an enchanting medieval village from the 1600s, known for its captivating atmosphere and natural wonders. With about 400 inhabitants, the village is characterized by a charming little square, alleys filled with the aroma of freshly baked pane cunzato, and artisanal shops. The village overlooks a dreamlike bay with crystal-clear, unspoiled waters framed by the majestic Faraglioni of Scopello.

Scopello is a district of Castellammare del Golfo, located near San Vito Lo Capo and home to the stunning Zingaro Nature Reserve. The beaches in this area, including the Faraglioni Beach, Cala Bianca, Cala Mazzo di Sciacca, and Guidaloca, are among the most beautiful in Sicily. To fully explore these wonders, we recommend renting a boat or booking an excursion, complete with diving equipment.

The Faraglioni of Scopello

The Faraglioni Beach hosts the historic Tonnara di Scopello and two imposing sea stacks rising from the water. Its clear waters and vibrant marine life make it a perfect spot for snorkeling enthusiasts. Although the beach is not sandy but composed of concrete platforms and rocks, it is ideal for sunbathing and swimming in a fairy-tale setting. Access to the beach is subject to an entrance fee, which includes access to public areas, deck chairs, and a guided tour of the Tonnara lasting about 45 minutes. The beach is easily accessible by car, with paid parking available nearby.

The Tonnara of Scopello

The Tonnara di Scopello is one of the oldest in Sicily and serves as a natural museum, showcasing the history of tuna fishing. The museum houses the fishing tools used and offers a guided tour that brings its fascinating history to life.

To fully appreciate this paradise, it is recommended to visit the Tonnara during less touristy periods, avoiding the peak weeks in August. If visiting Scopello during the summer, it is best to arrive early in the morning, whether you have booked a boat excursion or plan to explore on your own.
